Mother is a Vancouver band made up of Ryan & Molly Guldemond, Debra-Jean Creelman, Kenton Loewen, and Jeremy Page. The group was formed in January 2005 as an acoustic trio of just one guitar and three voices. Ryan recruited big sister Molly and college chum Debra-Jean to sing harmonies on a stock of original songs. What they found was a unique vocal chemistry that inspired a whirlwind of activity and new material.

After one month as a group they were performing in concert halls and recording in CBC studios where the first Mother demos were made. These recordings began to circulate, attributing to the growing buzz and fast momentum of this new band that seemed to take Vancouvers music scene a little by storm. One set of hands that the Live off the Floor in CBC Studio 1 demo fell into was Howard Redekopps, a Vancouver based producer/engineer whos worked with such artists as the New Pornographers, Teagan and Sara, and 54.40. Redekopp recognized a fierce originality in Mothers sound and began working with the band to conceptualize a full length album. The result was a self titled debut recorded predominately in Mothers living room, using a fairly unconventional method of recording. Many of the songs bed tracks were live off the floor performances of just guitar and three voices, sometimes using only one microphone. Additional instrumentation such as drums and bass, pots and pans, blenders and fire grates were then added later, depicting the backwards quality of the making of Mothers first record. Mother Mother was recorded in the summer of 2005 and independently released in the following winter.

When listening to Mothers debut you'll find a collection of fast paced, catchy songs encompassing a brand of post modern pop with jazz, folk/country and rock undertones. The lyrics are clever and come out full of word play, telling beautiful and beastly tales of contemporary life. What might in other instances make for an incongruent style, Mothers genre promiscuity is held together by a distinct vocal unity born through three part harmony, shared leads, and an effort to stray form the typical front vs back-up dynamic.

Faced with the question of recreating an album full of life and potential, not to mention drums and bass, the three sought out a rhythm section. What they found was not only the sonic breadth to help define Mothers sound as a full band, but two inspiring musicians and potent personalities. With the addition of Kenton Loewen on drums and Jeremy Page on bass, Mother morphed into a charged and dynamic five piece armed with a fiery live show and infectious stage chemistry. New material for a second album is being written. A release date is prospected for the spring of 2006.
